Kostadin, +1. As for Xerox rebranding... I used to work for Xerox for a short while, and, know what, most of those inside the company are not happy with new identity either. Yet, striving to become more public and open, and to be apprehended as a diverse company (not only copiers), Xerox turned to lower case letters and trendy effects. Time will show who's right.

I would say that Xerox' new identity just not good. And that's not a problem of the trend they follow. It would look nice and work good for long years if they use trends smarter and make their identity better.

the trends are set by good project for big companys...but trends are not always best choice becouse trends come and go!
A good example is XEROX... It folowed the trend and the new identity sucks! and i think the glossy glass 2.0 crap its almost over...what will they do? rebrand again?

When I talk about trends, I mean not just that 'in fashion' stuff like rich surfaces, 3D effects and transparencies. I talk about major changes, like moving away from standard identity systems with logotypes as the core of the whole brand identity to the complex systems of graphics, that communicate with the world and make it's brands unique and identifiable. Nowadays we see more flexible 'logos': they could be animated, polymorph, etc. Or there could even be no logo as a sign, but just a signature, combined with some abstract, but recognizable graphics.
So, when someone finds a new and effective way, to identify a brand, and it is clear to everyone, it soon becomes very popular and could be named 'a trend'.
How do you think brands would look like in the nearest future? Would there be any logos? What current trends you think would die and what would make their way?

I'm not sure about who launches trends and most I think became such without intend. I see them as sonetnih that's "in fashion" and becomes overpopular and aover used very quickly and then people move to the nest trend. Or we just have different perception of the word "trend".

Kostadin, all trends are launched by highly professional identity builders on the top of branding industry. So trends are just great ideas, that designers all over the world happy to use in their work. How could a great idea be momentary and change often? ;)

I'll kick off the disscusion let's hope people will join.
If Identities are designed to last they usually are beyond trends, trendy stuff is made to capture the moment and it gets changed often. Of the current design trends I think that the ones that'll last are the ones that can capture our time and can be used in historical context, for example urban type and flourishes (like the Si Scott style) to name two. Others that are going to last according to me are the ones that are connected with the advancements in print capabilities like transparency gradients and so on. Actually I think that they are already here to stay.
That's just my opinion what's yours ?
