You can always think of something new and different, but it could be unappreciated. How do i know? Well, if i can't sleep when i go to bed thinking of something i would make and i pull it off in the morning, that's a good idea for me :)

Allthough it's not the most productive process, if I still like it a month after I've created it (or simply sketched it out), it's probably a good idea... otherwise, it's unlikely to see the light of day, or it might vanish if it has.

Now, this dosen't really apply to innovative ideas, unfortunately, just because someone likes something over an extended period of time, dosen't make it new, fresh or whatever else some call it (hip?).

Really, the only way to know if it's a good / innovative idea, is to put it out there and see what others say about it. We might consider it outstanding and unique however, we're lacking the knowledge that 100s, 1000s or even more people have when combined.

Hard to know... In fact there's a very few people who are really inovating in graphic design, or in any other art domain. You think you have a great idea, and after few minutes checking the main art websites you realize that other people have already worked on it...
You can't create from scratch all your illustration, you certainly get a great part of your inspiration from other people's work. That's why to me, the point is : how to find your own style whereas most of people do the same thing?

Many times I've gone in thinking I've done something new and innovative only to be shot down by my peers or a teacher. So how do you know if it's truly an amazing idea or if it's a dud?
