I graduated from Iowa State University with a B.F.A. in Graphic Design. Since then, I've held creative positions in Ames, Des Moines, and my hometown of Davenport (all in Iowa). I've worked for my current company for almost 3 years as a graphics and web designer, and feel comfortable in that role. I studied abroad in Rome as a student at Iowa State, where I got a delicious taste of big-city life (not to mention Roman cuisine). I've since battled the urge to relocate against the benefits of being around friends and family in my hometown. Thus far, I've not had reason enough to move, but I am definitely open to the idea. People have accused me of being a talented artist since I was young, but I'm really uncomfortable with anything that sounds like boasting, so I'll leave it to your own judgment. I've also maintained an interest in story writing, which I believe has helped me to be a better designer. I have a friendly relationship with most of the clients I have worked with. At the office, I tend to push for new methods of development, and I think this is part of the reason we now design Responsively by default. Of my design skills, I would pick out color and layout as my strengths, as well as the methodology involved in brand development.

I consider myself competent in the Adobe suite of design software (as most designers should), though my coworkers most often seek my help in the creation of vector graphics and user interface elements. I am pretty good with HTML and CSS, and have used quite a few jQuery scripts as part of the websites I create, although gaining a full understanding of jQuery and Javascript is still on my to-do list. Our company codes websites in .NET, so I've become comfortable with the process of moving database-driven websites from test environments to live websites, as well as working with XSL and XML. We also do the occasional Wordpress website.

In general, I still don't have all the answers, but I think that's a good thing to recognize at this point in life. That said, I've become pretty good at knowing where to look. At work, I often reach out to co-workers for their thoughts and expertise. That is to say, I've had my "lone designer" way-of-working pointed out to me over the years, and I've made progress in becoming a better team player. Read Less
I've maintained a fascination with technology ever since my family bought its first computer, which combined with the aforementioned has brought me to a career in web design. Mostly, though, I value stories. Every group of words, images, or moving pictures has some sort of story to tell. Our job as designers is to make sure that story sends the intended message. Whether it's telling you why to spend $100 on a pair of shoes, or showing you the way into the ballpark without falling into the rancor pit, the story needs design to manifest itself. I like to think that in this way, we as designers can emphasize our worth in the market, and not just be people who make things pretty.

However, I also value skill and perseverance, which is why I continue to attend figure drawing classes at a local studio and work with a friend of mine on comic and drawing projects. I like to maintain a level of creative output after-hours so that I don't become too emotionally invested in my output at work. Read Less
