Hello, my name is Chelsie Nachreiner. I recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Stout in Menomonie, WI in the Studio Art Major with a concentration in Painting along with a double minor in Psychology and Spanish.

Wondering about existence and reality sparked the use of “portraits” of people who are real or imagined. This led to questions of existential crisis and consideration of how much or how little one can know about someone else. This body of work stems from my questions of dualities within the mind; questions such as, “what does it mean to exist versus to not exist?”, “how can control and chaos coexist?”, along with psychological questions about nature versus nurture.
Through layered structures and additive mark making a simple line or form becomes complex and may be hidden and distorted. A build-up of simple structures and decisive marks creates an overall complex, abstracted composition. There are facets to the compositions similar to people that are visible or hidden. The medium dictates how the marks are made and how the overall structure is composed. Through abstraction the subject is portrayed as an idea: the idea of who and what a specific person is and how I view them.
The minute scale of the works reinforces the intimacy between the subject and myself as maker. Whether the subject exists outside of my mind and I have a relationship to them personally is not clear and the intimacy is not lost but imposed upon those who do not exist outside of the work. The viewer is drawn in close to discover details that would not be visible from a distance. Hidden details are constructed through the layering of different structures based on color in addition to overall shape. Read Less
