Who?
Paul Blazey is best known for his magnificent large format street artworks which he has been creating since the late 1980’s. In more recent times he has also been engaged with creating a body of contemporary work that includes drawings of city scenes along with oil paintings of related urban environments and experiences.
Since early in his career, Blazey has been immersed in Hip Hop and street art culture where in his homeland of Australia his work is very well known. As an early participant in this emerging genre he has, like his body of work transcended these roots over time but still remains sympathetic to its aesthetics. As a completely self taught artist, his mantra is to not be pigeon-holed by working within just one genre.
During the late 1990s, he experimented with various mediums and also became proficient in the commercial arts including airbrush, sign making and graphic design where he made a full time living for a decade. These skills have added another element to his distinctive style of work. The mid 2000’s have seen him travel extensively, particularly across Asia which has clearly provided visual elements and references to his newer works. Throughout this journey, Blazey has accumulated an abundant body of photos that is often a source of new works.
In his work, Blazey often seeks to offer the viewer a narrative that is sometimes subtle in reference but complex in nature that draws strength from pitching the struggles of the eternal underdog against the powers that be. He achieves a striking sense of realism that is often offset by a restrained but ever present feel of transcience that street art often encapsulates.
Born in Australia in 1974, Paul Blazey attended the prestigious Scotch college of Adelaide where he achieved the highest possible scores for Art and Design in his final year before setting out on his unconventional artistic education of experimentation and self discovery. In late 2011 he became a resident of the United Arab Emirates and is now pursuing a career as a full time exhibiting artist.
In his latest works, Blazey seeks to draw upon all of his artistic experiences to deliver a range of unique works that are inspired by the themes of stereotypes, social disorder, fame and urban living.
