The Self Divides

Like most things, I'm torn on how to start this statement. Part of me wants to go through this goofy route and reference shows like "Herman's Head" and things like the cartoon devil and angel perched on either shoulder. The other half of me wants to reference the likes of Freud's id, ego, and the superego, Tyler Durden from Fight Club, or the movie Identity. But that's how it goes, you're always fighting yourself, and that is what this show is all about.

The idea goes like so, everyone has these spirits, voices, personas or whatever you want to call them, inside of their head. For my exhibition, I have decided to display these aforementioned identities in a way that would make them seem real or at least more concrete than the idea of disembodied voices in the dark. The personas are not necessarily good or evil, it's too simple to paint the world in only black & white. They are not heroic, or even realistic. They are contradictory because they have to be, for otherwise where would internal conflict come from.

Chosen to represent the personas are different masks. Throughout history the mask has been used to represent spirits, though the historical spirits usually are on a grander scale. The masks add to and indulge the thoughts, feelings, and the actions of the individual personas. It makes the personas more surreal and bizarre; it gives them life in a way that nothing else could.

This show represents me trying to figure out who I really am. I feel that by naming these personas and giving them attributes I can better understand myself. I had to do this publicly it is only in this way that I could separate myself far enough from it to really see it and understand it. This show has helped me better to understand myself, and I hope that it can make you the viewer look internally at yourself and see why it is you do the things you do.
